Elf Costumes Now Most Popular Outfits At Christmas According To All Fancy Dress

According to leading costume retailer All Fancy Dress, sales of elf costumes have overtaken Santa costumes for the first time, making them now the most popular Christmas category. Traditionally, sales of Father Christmas costumes, along with the equivalent ‘Mrs Santa Outfits,’ have accounted for the highest percentage of Christmas sales. However 2011 has seen a marked change in buyer behaviour with a far greater number of both elf and novelty costumes ‘flying out the door’.
According to Matt Foden of All Fancy Dress, ‘Customers are looking for something a little different for Christmas nowadays. And whilst Father Christmas costumes are still popular, sales of both elf fancy dress costumes and novelty costumes have proved incredibly popular this year. We have also noticed that more and more customers are deciding to hold fancy dress themed parties in the run up to the festive period.’
The rise in popularity of elf costume may have been driven, at least in part, by the popularity of cult films such as ‘Elf’ starring the multi-talented Will Ferrell. According to Matt Foden, ‘Many customers seem to identify with the ‘naughty’ and ‘impish’ qualities of the traditional Christmas elf, and this seems to form much of the appeal of these costumes. I also think it’s hard to take yourself too seriously when you are wearing a green and red elf suit, and a pair of oversized elf shoes!’
Whatever the reasons behind this new demand for elf costumes, it appears that Santa now has a firm rival in the Christmas popularity stakes.
