According to IBISWorld industry analyst Eben Jose, the online retail marketplace is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, and as more traditional retailers (i.e. brick-and-mortar) have entered the online space to recapture sales taken by retailers that sell exclusively online, industry revenue has expanded even further. In the five years to 2012, IBISWorld expects industry-specific revenue to increase at an annualized rate of 6.7%.</p>

<p>While the industry has fared well recently, it did face some challenges immediately following the recession. The financial collapse and the recession that followed severely crippled the US economy. The rise in unemployment and decrease in disposable income forced many businesses downstream of this industry to cut back on production, thus decreasing industry revenue. Furthermore, the lack of available credit slowed industrial production at an average rate of 0.7% annually over the five years to 2012. Combined, these problems brought growth to a standstill in 2009, when industry revenue actually decreased 0.7%. Although the US economy remains sluggish, this industry has rebounded nicely as more downstream businesses shift purchases from brick-and-mortar retailers to online establishments to take advantage of industry&#8217;s often lower prices. As a result, industry-specific revenue is expected to increase 10.3% in 2012.</p>

<p>The Online Industrial Supplies Sales industry will continue climbing over the next five years, and the return of US manufacturing and industrial production will only push growth further. IBISWorld estimates industry revenue will increase strongly over the five years to 2017. Additionally, the rising acceptance of online shopping will continue to drive growth over this period as it did over the past five years. The projected increase in companies will put pressure on profit margins as industry participants are forced to compete on price. Furthermore, the continued adaptation of the industry&#8217;s external competitors is expected to threaten revenue over the period.</p>

<p>This industry is highly concentrated, in contrast to the brick-and-mortar marketplace, which is dominated by small, local mom-and-pop shops. IBISWorld estimates that in 2012, the top four firms in this industry will generate 81.3% of industry revenue. During the past five years, concentration has increased. The economic recession allowed the large operators to take market share from smaller players that had to scale back to adjust to slowing demand. “Major players achieved some resilience to economic downturns by vertically integrating with transportation industries that can better absorb high input costs, such as fuel,” said Jose. Through the recession, major player Grainger cut 600 positions in 2009 to counter falling sales but invested cash in expanding its product offering to remain competitive. It added sales representatives and expanded its product lines to provide customers a differentiated offer at a time when they needed easy access to a broad array of maintenance, repair and operations products. Meanwhile, some of the smaller players in the industry have exited the industry due to a higher sensitivity to economic conditions. <p> Hannon Hill Corporation, creator of the premier enterprise content management system (CMS) for Higher Education, has released Cascade Server 7.0. The newest version of its CMS software introduces a record number of major new features designed to further empower content contributors and simplify technical processes in the software. </p>

<p>Among other new features and improvements, this version introduces Site Clone, a feature that allows sites to be copied in their entirety in order to streamline the process of creating new sites; Modules, a strategic new initiative to offer more components that end users without technical expertise can easily set up to generate dynamic content; and a Spectate Connector, which allows users to access forms built in Spectate and insert them into pages in Cascade Server via a button in the WYSIWYG editor toolbar.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Site Clone allows users to copy all of the content of entire sites, including navigation and administration assets. Links contained within assets of a site will be re-aligned in the site copy to point to the corresponding assets within the copied site. These and other improvements to the existing site copy functionality will make it easier for customers to create new sites from existing template sites.</p>

<p>“Site Clone is going to be a game changer for templating out entire Sites,” said Charlie Holder, Sales Engineer for Cascade Server. “Bringing new departments and organizations into Cascade will be as simple as starting the copy routine.”</p>

<p>The introduction of modules represents a strategic shift in how end users create content for their websites. Starting in Cascade Server 7.0, end users will be able create dynamic content feeds and other modular components that would have historically required more technical expertise to create. Hannon Hill’s module strategy was created in order to provide more out-of-the-box functionality to end users for organizations with limited IT resources, while still allowing full customization of site features and maximum flexibility. </p>

<p>The first module that is being added to Cascade Server is a Twitter feed. It allows users to insert a feed of Twitter comments into any region of a page on their website, and it can be customized to pull in any combination of tweets and mentions for a specific account or use a general search query. Hannon Hill plans to introduce a range of other modules in future versions of Cascade Server.</p>

<p>The Spectate forms connector is the first official bridge between Cascade Server CMS and Spectate Content Marketing Software. By offering a connector, users will have access to a much more user-friendly form builder and have the capability to insert forms directly into pages in Cascade Server using a new button on the WYSIWYG toolbar. </p>

It&#8217;s not as flashy as some of the other features in 7.0, but from a user experience perspective it&#8217;s huge. Once the cache has been filled, it will only take a fraction of the time it previously took for pages to load.”</p>

<p>Other noteworthy features include extended support for HTML5, automatic unpublishing of assets upon moving or renaming them, site import/export, database export, inline regions, and an improved asset chooser with search capability. Site import/export allows entire sites to be exported from one instance of Cascade Server and imported into another instance in order to move sites into and out of test or development instances of the software. Database export allows the entire system to be exported in order to help speed up support requests. Inline regions allow non-technical users to apply blocks to pages and page types from the page edit screen. The improved asset chooser includes a new dropdown menu with historical items and search results and appears as an inline overlay rather than a pop-up window.</p>

Prolecto Resources, of Los Angeles, California, wrote the code and produced the schematics for the patent application. The first patent, service-marked, Sales-Chip™ is the saved search engine. The just-published second patent, called, &#8220;Chip-Alerts™&#8221; on sales-fax.com, leverages the first to deliver updates via email. Together, the two patented inventions work as a mechanism to &#8220;push&#8221; contact intelligence updates and sales leads almost instantly. <p>Since its initial procurements by the U.S. Navy in 1982, the UYQ-21 U.S. Naval Tactical Display System (NTDS) console has been the standard for many U.S. Navy surface vessels. Ships that have been equipped with the UYQ-21(V) console include CG-47 Ticonderoga class AEGIS cruisers; DDG-51 Arleigh Burke class AEGIS destroyers; FFG-7 Oliver Hazard Perry class frigates; LHD-1 Wasp class amphibious assault ships; and CVN-68 Nimitz aircraft carriers.  It is estimated that more than 3,500 consoles were produced before production stopped in 2002.</p>

<p>Orbit has been the lead supplier of Computer Controlled Action Entry Panels (CCAEP) since 1970; first for the Navy’s UYA-4 Consoles, then for their UYQ-21 consoles. These early units were based on the rear-projection read-out CCAEP technology that was the state of the art at that time.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Orbit Instrument designed and developed its first flat plasma panel data entry systems in the 1990s, to replace the rear-projection CCAEP and keep the U.S. Navy on the cutting edge of technology needed to enhance mission capabilities. Now, because LCD displays are able to further enhance the Navy’s mission, Orbit’s color LCD touch screen is the third-generation replacement. </p>

<p>Orbit absorbed all Non-Recurring Engineering (NRE) costs.</p>

<p>To reduce the Navy’s cost for entry into this essential upgrade program, Orbit absorbed the NRE costs for its third-generation solution. The new Color Entry Panels utilize Orbit COTS LCD touch screens and Single Board Computers. Orbit Instrument also developed all necessary software and firmware to connect the new CEP to the existing UYQ-21(V) display systems interface, and to ensure that the new LCD panel is completely on-line and off-line downloadable. After laboratory tests were completed at Orbit Instrument’s design and manufacturing facility in New York, units were tested at several Navy facilities and aboard U.S. Navy combat ships.</p>

<p>The new CEP is a rugged design, well-suited to withstand the rigors of shipboard combat operations.</p>

<p>According to Sam Berhumoglu, Orbit Instrument Vice President for Sales and Marketing, “Orbit was able to absorb the non-recurring engineering costs and still deliver an all-new CEP system at a price comparable to the cost for repairing  the older, obsolete Plasma panel. That’s a win for the US Navy, because the same funds budgeted for repairing the older system can now pay for a new higher-performance system.”</p>

<p>The Orbit Instrument CEP can be readily modified for other military, FAA or industrial programs that require a 6.5” Display. The COTS single board computer interface is modular in design, and available with RS-232, USB and Ethernet interfaces.</p>

To ensure accurate and actionable feedback,  K2 Awards allows all of their customers to post comments directly to the home page of their website without any prior review or editing.</p>

<p>Charlie Moss, President of K2Awards.com, says that the program has been a huge success but it is not for the faint of heart.  Moss stated, &#8220;When we started the program of reaching out to all of our customers and allowing them to post their experiences directly to the home page, we knew that the overwhelming number of our customers really liked the products and services we offered.  However, we also knew that on occasion we made mistakes and made customers angry and recognized that virtually every unhappy customer would post a review, while only a fraction of the happy customers would take the time write a review.  The potential of bad reviews sitting right up front on the home page of our site was motivation to make sure that we never created an unhappy customer.  And largely it has worked out.&#8221; </p>

<p>That does not mean there have not been bad reviews posted.  Moss continued &#8220;While over 99% of our customers would recommend K2 Awards to their friends, a couple of unhappy customers have posted some pretty nasty comments.  It pains us to see these comments, but I think our customers appreciate our boldness and honesty.&#8221;</p>

<p>The customer feedback has lead to a number of improvements at the company including extended customer service hours, elimination (and addition) of many products and, even a complete overhaul of the shipping interface. Moss believes that the company&#8217;s complete transparency gives new customers the confidence they need to complete their order. </p>
